Lesson 3 Topic: Extralinguistic issues in intercultural communication the body language, taboos, stereotypes. Done by:Khurramova Aziza How body language affects intercultural communication We communicate a great deal of information without actually speaking. But we are often unaware that the sound of our voice, our posture, our facial expression and the look in our eyes are very expressive. Especially in intercultural communication, body language is very important. Body language is often employed unconsciously. Its effect always depends on the context and is based on the interpretations of the counterpart. If you would like to use body language, for instance to make a lecture interesting or be successful in negotiations, you should make sure that your body language is appropriate for what you are saying. What are Taboos? A taboo is a strong social prohibition of any human activity or social custom that is forbidden based on moral or religious beliefs. Taboos include the things people shouldn’t do as well as the things they shouldn’t talk about. Breaking a taboo can be considered anything from just objectionable and slightly embarrassing to absolutely abhorrent and disgusting. Cultural stereotypes The concept of the 'stereotype' was borrowed from old raised printing technology, where copies of a composed type were made by using papiermache as molds for new printing plates, identical to the original.
