5. Conclusion 
From all of the pieces of literature presented in this paper it is obvious that Tolkien is 
a poet. He has the greatest skill to use poetry as some kind of a vehicle. He uses poetry in his 
prose books, when he needs to express some mood or to highlight some important moment. 
As a scholar, poetry in his hands becomes an instrument to explain a term, to bring people 
closer to works of art and the literary tradition. He also experiments with poetry 
– he creates 
a short drama from Old English epic poem or combines Norse and English features of 
alliterative verse into one piece of work. It seems that poetry is some kind of a tool for him 
that can be explained by the fact that his poetry is most beautiful and worthy in 
consideration with what is connected to it 
– short poems and riddles as a part of a book, 
translations as derivations from the originals, adaptations as parts of famous literary 
traditions. It always has some higher purpose. On the other hand, he very seldom writes 
something really different. He experiments with the formal aspect, even though the 
alliterative verse is his favourite, but the content has always something to do with fantasy 
and medieval literature. He never publishes a collection of poems with a different content, 
so we may only guess whether they would be successful or not. 
J. R. R. Tolkien is half poet and half prose-writer. And only because these two traits 
developed inside of his mind equally and simultaneously he could produce masterpieces that 
are loved by millions of people around the world. As Humphrey Carpenter put it in his 
iograph a out Tolkie ´s ork - even "though in prose, it is a poetic work" (Carpenter 85).
