Matching Sentence Endings – Strategies - Tips – Techniques
Understanding IELTS Reading Matching Sentence Endings Questions
In this type of question you need to choose the correct ending for each sentence
by selecting the ending from a list given. You will have to match them on the
basis
of the information provided in the passage.
The instructions will contain two lists :
A] A list of incomplete sentences
B] A list of possible sentence endings
This type of question does not come as often as other types in the IELTS exam.
However, this should not encourage you to skip matching sentence endings
altogether.
KEY TIPS
The
answers appear in the same order in the text as the order of
the list of
incomplete sentences.
Use
a process of elimination to select the correct answers.
Do not read the text until you have studied the incomplete
sentences and the
sentence endings.
You do not need to read the whole text in detail, just the relevant
sentences. Highlight key words. This will help you to focus on the meaning
and identify the words you will later scan for the text.
Synonyms and paraphrasing will be used. You are matching meaning, not
the exact words.
The grammatical structure of the two halves of the sentence must
match. If they do not, you have the wrong answer.
Double check that the matched sentence is grammatically correct and fill in
your answer sheet. Then , cross through the sentence
ending in the list to
eliminate it from further consideration.
Predict what the endings might be before looking at them. Think about what
word type (verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs) makes the sentence
grammatically correct.
