METHODS OF TEACHING COMPARISON OF DEGREES ADJECTIVE IN ENGLISH

Common Adjectives Crossword
In this adjectives worksheet activity, students complete a crossword by describing and guessing common adjectives. The students are divided into two groups (A and B) and each student is given a corresponding worksheet. Both groups have the same crossword, but Group A has the adjectives down and Group B has the adjectives across. Working together, the students invent and write down clues for the adjectives written on their crossword. When the students have finished writing, they pair up with someone from the other group (Student A and B). The students then take it in turns to ask their partner for a clue to one of their missing adjectives, e.g. 'What's 3 across?' Their partner reads out the clue for that adjective and the other student tries to guess what it is. If the student correctly guesses the adjective, they write it on their crossword. If not, their partner continues to give more clues until the student is able to guess the word. When the students have finished, they check their spelling by comparing crosswords.
Crazy Sentences
Here is an entertaining adjectives activity to help students practice constructing sentences with certain adjectives and nouns. The class is divided into four teams. Each team is given a set of adjective cards and a set of noun cards, which they shuffle and place face down on the desk in two separate piles. A three-minute time limit is set and each team turns over one adjective card and one noun card. The teams then race to construct the longest sentence possible with the adjective and noun and write it on the board. When the three minutes are up, each team’s sentence is checked. One point is awarded if a sentence is grammatically correct. One point is awarded for inventiveness. One point is also given for every word in the sentence. If a team writes a grammatically incorrect sentence, they score no points, but other teams can steal a point by successfully correcting the sentence. Teams then discard the adjective and noun, turn over two new cards and the game is repeated. This continues until all the cards have been used. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins [9.3].
