METHODS OF TEACHING COMPARISON OF DEGREES ADJECTIVE IN ENGLISH

The Category Game
In this rewarding teaching activity, students play a game where they race to categorize adjectives and then make sentences with them. The students are divided into teams of two or three and each team is given a copy of the worksheet. The teams then race to categorize the adjectives of opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material and purpose in the box on the worksheet and write them under the appropriate heading. The first team to categorize all the adjectives correctly scores five points. Next, an adjective from the worksheet is called out at random, e.g. delicious. The first student to give the correct category (i.e. adjective of opinion) and make a meaningful sentence with the adjective (e.g. This pizza tastes delicious.) scores a point for their team. When all the adjectives have been reviewed, the points for each team are added up to find the winner. This activity can also be used as a standalone worksheet
Adjective-Noun Dominoes 2
In this adjectives activity, students play a game where they match adjectives and nouns together to make collocations and then use the collocations in sentences. The students are divided into groups of three. Each group is given a set of dominoes. The students shuffle the dominoes and deal out five each, leaving the rest in a pile face down. The top domino from the pile is turned over and placed face up on the table. The first player puts down one of their dominoes on either side of the domino on the table, making sure that the adjective and noun make a suitable collocation. If the player makes an appropriate collocation, he or she scores a point. For an extra point, the player then uses the adjective-noun collocation in a sentence. The other players then take it in turns to match the adjectives and nouns together by putting their dominoes down at either end of the domino chain and making a suitable sentence when a collocation is formed. If a player cannot put down one of their dominoes, they take one from the top of the pile and put it down if they can. If there are no dominoes left in the pile, play passes to the next student. The game finishes when a player has gotten rid of all their dominoes. The students then add up their scores. The player with the most points wins the game [11.3].
