History Microsoft unveiled the first preview to its business intelligence service also called Power BI within Office 365 developed basically for customers to track down data about their businesses in September 2014. The first release of Power BI released on 24 July 2015 and was based on Excel Based Add ins: Power Pivot, Power Query, Power view and Power Map. With time Microsoft has added more features like Question and Answers, enterprise level data connectivity and security options via Power BI Gateways and a lot more. Power View It is an interactive data exploration, visualization, and presentation experience that encourages intuitive ad-hoc reporting Power Query Microsoft Power Query for Excel enhances self-service business intelligence (BI) for Excel with an intuitive and consistent experience for discovering, combining, and refining data across a wide variety of sources including relational, structured and semi-structured, OData, Web, Hadoop, Azure Marketplace, and more Power Pivot Power Pivot is an Excel add-in you can use to perform powerful data analysis and create sophisticated data models. With Power Pivot, you can mash up large volumes of data from various sources, perform information analysis rapidly, and share insights easily. Power Map It is a 3D data visualization tool for Excel that provides an immersive experience for making discoveries in data that might never be seen in traditional 2D tables and charts Introduction Power BI is a business analytics service provided by Microsoft. It provides interactive visualizations with self- service BI capabilities enabling users to create reports and dashboards without the help of IT and Database administration. The cloud based BI services also known as Power BI Services, along with a desktop based interface - called Power BI desktop are provided by Microsoft. It provides data warehouse capabilities which include data preparation, data discovery and interactive dashboards. In March 2016,an additional service called Power BI Embedded on its Azure cloud platform was also unveiled by Microsoft. Advantages Of Power BI • Lower upfront costs. The basic version of Power BI is a free subscription service, where the full Power BI Pro costs $9.99 per month, per user. • Mobility. Power BI tools are available for mobile apps in Android and iOS. • Cortana integration. Power BI is also integrated with Cortana. A user can now access Power BI analytics and results with verbal questions using Cortana's natural language capabilities. • APIs for integration. Power BI offers extendibility for developers to incorporate the platform with custom software. Disadvantages of Power BI • Power BI will not accept files larger than 1 GB. • Power BI reports and dashboards cannot accept or pass user, account or other entity parameters. This makes it impossible to create entity specific dashboards such as a dashboard for an account, opportunity, case, or campaign. • Very few data sources that permit (near) real-time connections to Power BI reports and dashboard. • Users having the same email domains or email domains listed with your Office 365 tenant can only be shared dashboards and reports . • The integration to Dynamics CRM is limited. POWER BI Desktop Data Sources In Power BI Typically organized into The following categories:- • All(containing all sources) • File • Database • Azure • Online Services • Other Query Overview in Power BI Power BI Desktop has three views: Report view – where you use queries to create visualizations, arranged as you want them to appear, and with multiple pages, that you can share with others Data view –Where you can see the data in data model format, add measures , new columns and manage relationships. Relationships view –Used to create a graphical representation of the relationships which has been established in your data model and manage or modify them accordingly. Create and Manage Relationships • AutoDetect during data load Creating manual relationships Cross Filter Direction Both - This is the most common, default direction. This means for filtering purposes, both tables are treated as if they're a single table. Single - This means that filtering choices in connected tables work on the table where values are being aggregated Cardinality Many to One (*:1) - This is the most common, default type. This means the column in one table can have more than one instance of a value, and the other related table, often know as the Lookup table, has only one instance of a value. One to One (1:1) - This means the column in one table has only one instance of a particular value, and the other related table has only one instance of a particular value Data Types in Power BI Data Types in Query Editor Data types in data view or report view Visualizations in Power BI Basic and Stacked Area Chart Combo Charts Doughnut charts Gauge chart Matrix chart Multi Row cards Line chart Funnel KPI Custom Visualizations in Power BI • The Power BI visuals gallery provides custom visualizations which are created by the members of the community and by Microsoft. • These Visualizations behave just like the native visualizations which can filtered, highlighted, shared, edited, etc. Query Editor 1. Different options to interact with the data 2. Left pane which list different queries. 3. Center pane that displays data from the current query 4. The Query Settings window appears, listing the query’s properties and applied steps Data Analysis Expressions(DAX) When you create your own measures, you’ll use the Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) formula language. DAX includes a library of over 200 functions, operators, and constructs, providing immense flexibility in creating measures to calculate results DAX expressions provide the capability to get useful results that are used to analyze and get useful insights . Measures and calculated columns Measures are used in some of the most common data analysis; for example, sums, averages, minimum or maximum values, counts, or more advanced calculations you create yourself using a DAX formula. With calculated columns, you can add new data to a table. But instead of querying and loading values into your new column from a data source, you create a DAX formula that defines its values Service Navigation Bar Dashboard with tiles Q & A Box Additional Dashboard Buttons Power BI Home Button Help and Feedback Buttons Dashboard Title Office 365 app Launcher Power BI Workspace Some Basic Concepts Dashboard is a collection which contains zero or more tiles and widgets. Each tile displays a single visualization that was created from a dataset and pinned to the dashboard. Each dashboard is used to represent a customized view of some subset of the underlying datasets. Reports:-A Power BI report is one or more pages of visualizations (charts, graphs and images).Reports can be created from scratch, imported to dashboard and created using datasets. Datasets:-A dataset is something that you import or connect to. Datasets can be refreshed, renamed, explored and removed. Each listed dataset represents a single source of data. Types Of Data Sources Files Excel (.xlsx, xlxm)-a workbook can have data entered manually or data which is queried and loaded from external data sources. Data can be in simple worksheets or loaded into a data model Comma Separated Value (.csv) - Files are simple text files with rows of data. Each row can contain one or more values, each separated by a comma Power BI Desktop (.pbi) - You can use Power BI Desktop to query and load data from external data sources, extend your data model with measures and relationships, and create reports. You can import your Power BI Desktop file into your Power BI site. Databases Databases in the Cloud – From the Power BI service, you can connect live to Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Data Warehouse ,etc. Connections from Power BI to these databases are live. Databases on-premises – From the Power BI service, you can connect directly to SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular model databases. A Power BI Enterprise Gateway is required Content Packs Content packs contain all of the data and reports you need already prepared for you. In Power BI, there are two types of content packs: Services – There are literally dozens of services with content packs for Power BI, and more are being added all the time. Most services require you to have an account. Organizational – If you and other users in your organization have a Power BI Pro account, you can create, share, and use content packs Data Refresh or Schedule Refresh Whenever you refresh data in a dataset, Power BI uses information in the dataset to connect to the data sources defined for it, query for updated data, and then loads the updated data into the dataset. Any visualizations in your reports or dashboards based on the data are updated automatically. On-premises data gateway The on-premises data gateway is used as a bridge, providing quick and secure data transfer between on- premises data (data that is not in the cloud) and different apps. Visual Interactions in Power BI By default, visualizations on a report page can be used to cross- filter and cross-highlight the other visualizations on the page. For example, selecting a state on a map visualization highlights the column chart and filters the line chart to display only data that applies to that one state. Groups Groups in Power BI bring together people and information, and connect with apps across Office 365 to foster communication and collaboration. Power BI groups are built on groups in Office 365. As the creator of a group, you are automatically an admin. As admin, you can add and delete members, and make other members admins. All admins can create, update, and delete the dashboards, reports, and other content of the group. Publishing to the Web With Power BI Publish to web you can easily embed interactive Power BI visualizations online, such as in blog posts, websites , etc. You can also easily edit, update, refresh or un-share your published visuals. Publish to web is available on reports in your personal or group workspaces that you can edit. You cannot use Publish to web with reports that were shared with you, or reports that rely on row level security to secure the data Power BI Mobile Apps Power Bi mobile apps provide the flexibility to stay connected with your data on mobile devices. Power BI mobile apps are available for iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, or Apple Watch), Android phone, or Windows 10 device. Power BI developer Power BI displays dashboards that are interactive, and can be created and updated from many different data sources in real time. Using any programming language that supports REST calls, you can create apps that integrate with a Power BI dashboard in real-time. You can also integrate Power BI tiles and reports into apps.
