MATERIALS: • board and markers Unit 2 Study and Learning: categorising Objective: to provide further practice of this soft skill within the area of Study and Learning (identifying and categorising different ways to study a foreign language). The three-step strategy for developing this soft skill is: Step 1 Understand the purpose of categorising. (Ex. A) Step 2 Categorise the items using relevant characteristics. (Ex. B, Ex. C) Step 3 Use the information to make a decision. (Ex. D) You may decide to highlight this strategy at the beginning of the lesson, at the end, or as you go through the exercises. However, if you prefer to teach this lesson without discussing the underlying soft skill, this is also possible. The lesson is designed to be engaging and successful either way. For more information about teaching life skills and ideas for how to highlight the soft skill, please refer to pp. 18–19 of the Elementary Level Teacher’s Book. Lead-in To set the context for this lesson, ask the students why people learn foreign languages. Write their ideas on the board (e.g. some people want to travel; others need to speak another language at work; others have to learn a second language at university; some people learn languages for pleasure ). If you wish, ask the students to recall the lesson from the Elementary Student’s Book, pp. 28–29 and say what they learnt (e.g. that items in a category have the same or similar characteristics; that categorising can help us organise information and make decisions, that things can go in more than one category etc).
