Adjectives (ADJ)
Adjectives constitute the abstract end of the continuum (aggressive, friendly, honest), by not only
abstracting from the singular episode but also from the object of the behavior (”Josephine is
aggressive” does not really need an object of the aggression to be meaningful).
Defining features:
No object or situation reference
No context reference
Detached from specific behaviors
Characteristic features:
Refers to highly abstract person disposition
Highly interpretive
Adjectives classify a person, a group or a specific behavior in relation to other persons, groups or
behaviors.
”I pass o to matters for which he an Dönitz were more immediately responsible (ADJ).” (IMT-GB,
p.543)
”Useful (ADJ) though their results are, there remain some disadvantages with the methods used ...”
(E & P, p.33)
”The Sarge looked confident (ADJ) for the battle of his lifetime.” (WWF, p.21)
”He was plainly blind (ADJ), for he tapped (DAV) before him with a stick, and wore (IAV) a great
green shade over his eyes and nose; and he was hunched (ADJ), as if with age or weakness, and

wore (IAV) a huge old tattered sea-cloak with a hood, that made him appear positively deformed
(ADJ).” (CB-TI, p.17)
See also:
”He is tired (ADJ).”
Although ”tired” does not indicate a stable disposition, it is nevertheless categorized as an ADJ,
because it is an adjective.
”He looks angry (ADJ).”
Rule (5): Predicative adjectives of copulas or linking verbs like ”look”, ”seem”, ”become” are
ADJ, the linking verbs get no additional categorization (they do not constitute an unit).
Adjectivals are syntactical structures that take the function of an adjective but lack some of its
attributes (i.e. they can not take the normal inflexions).
Examples for such adjectivals are:
”The barking (DAV, not ADJ) dog attacked (IAV) everyone that came near.”
”The insulted (Passive, not ADJ) customer left (IAV) the shop.”
Rule (6): Adjectivals are treated as subordinate clauses and categorized accordingly.
