The use of Fuzzy Logic Control in Manufacturing Systems

Abstract:
In this report we will introduce the use of fuzzy logic control in manufacturing processes. 
Specifically, we will design a fuzzy logic control system for queuing and scheduling in a 
manufacturing process.The proposed fuzzy logic control system will use fuzzy logic principles to 
find the heuristic relations between the inputs and the outputs we are studying. The inputs in this 
project are the number of products to be processed and the average service (process) time by each 
machine. We will assume that the machines are automated and that the routing of the products to 
these machines will also be done automatically and in a very short time (negligible). All machines 
are also assumed to be identical in both the function (manufacturing process) and the service time. 
Given the inputs as the number of products and the average service time our goal will be to 
determine the outputs, which are in our case the number of the machines that need to be working 
and the number of the operators. 
Those operators job is to watch the automated machines for any expected failures or 
malfunctioning, and usually they are much less than the number of the machines, since we assumed 
these machines is fully automated. We will design this system using fuzzy logic control, and after 
we build the logic we will interpret it to numerical values, and for this purpose we will use Matlab 
software as a programming platform.
