Education Collocations 
In the IELTS Writing and Speaking tests you need to show that you can use a wide range 
of vocabulary. This means that you have to demonstrate an awareness of how words are 
used in relation to each other. For example, which verbs or which adjectives regularly go 
with which nouns. These are called collocations (word combinations). 
The following exercises will help you to learn and practise some common collocations 
related to the topic of education. 
Exercise 1  
Let’s start by looking at some typical verb + noun collocations used with the nouns 
‘exam’, ‘course’ and ‘qualification’.
