Module 1.1. Week 3

Materials: Handouts, posters, colourful markers
Warm-up:

  1. Ask trainees to read the the following text (Handout 1). Tell them to spend only 30 seconds to read it and answer the given question.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handout 1
Romulus and Remus
The early history of the city of Rome involves Romulus and Remus, two orphan boys who, legend says, were raised by a she-wolf. The boys' mother had been murdered by an evil king and the two babies tossed into the river Tiber. When the wolf found them they had washed up on the shore. She perhaps took pity on the crying of the babies and, gently picking them up in her teeth, she carried them back to her cave and fed them on her milk. The boys grew bigger and stronger and, eventually, were found by a herdsman who took them home. He and his wife raised the boys like their own children. When they reached manhood they sought revenge on the king who had killed their mother and driven them from their home.
They decided to build a city. Unfortunately, they argued over the appropriate site and Romulus killed his brother Remus. Romulus ruled this city -- called Roma -- for thirty-seven years.
The city of Rome is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. If you travel there you can see a statue of the two baby boys feeding from their mother - the wolf.
Q: What is the gist (the main idea) that this text conveys?

    1. Wolves like to take care of human children.

    2. The city of Rome had many wolves in the old days.

    3. The city of Rome was founded by a wolf.

    4. Romulus established the city of Rome.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: D
After trainees have found the right answer, ask the following questions:

  1. How did you find the right answer?

  2. How do you usually read when you want to survey a text to get a general idea?

Elicit random responses. At this stage accept all possible answers.

Activity 1

  1. Ask trainees to read the text (Handout 2)in 30 seconds and to identify all of the personal qualities of a teacher listed in the text. Watch the time and after 30 seconds elicit the answers from volunteers.

  2. Tell trainees to read the text again, but this time ask them to read only the first sentence of each paragraph in the following text. Ask trainees to underline the keywords in these sentences and to come up with a list of personal qualities of a teacher.

  3. Ask the following question:

Why is the first sentence of a paragraph important in identifying the main idea?
Possible answer: Paragraphs are organised internally and the first sentence of each paragraph is often a summary of, or an introduction to, the paragraph. You can therefore get a good idea of the overall content of a text by reading the first sentence of each paragraph.
