Round-up: Summarise the session by asking the following questions: Why is skimming important? In what ways can you skim a text? How can you improve your reading skills?
Duration: 80 min Objectives: to help teachers to think what topics they may be asked during a speaking test and to practice to stay on topic and learn to extend their answers Warm up: Play Word Association Time: 10 min. Materials: none Procedure: Have the teachers sit in a circle. Involving all participants do Option 1 or Option 2. Option 1. Start the game with a simple word and ask the person to your left to say the first (English) word that begins with the last letter of the previous word, e.g., word, donkey, yodel, loon. Then, the person to his or her left should say the first word that comes to his or her mind. Option 2. A variation of this game is to have each teacher say a word that is associated with the main topic, e.g., Topic is Family: mother, father, uncle, a baby etc. Activity 1 Exploring topics Objective: to help participants to explore possible topics that are assigned in speaking tests Time: 15 min. Materials: Handout 1 Procedure: Distribute a probable list of questions that may be asked in speaking component of English speaking exam. Ask teachers to look through the questions and write the topic title in each box. (Answer keys are in bold)
Ask teachers what other topics they may face during a Speaking test Possible answers: Hometown, Hobby, Neighborhood, Languages, Study, Environment, Holidays, Technology, Music, etc. Put teachers in pairs.
