Moluccella bucharica (B. Fedtsch.) Ryding was first discovered in 1915 and described as
Otostegia
bucharica B. Fedtsch. It was named in honour of the region where it had been harvested –
the Bukhara

The type specimen was collected near Derbend-Shurab (Surkhandarya Region) by B. Fedtschenko in
1913.
As a result of genetic research on the genus in 2011, this species
was transferred to the genus
Moluccella, along with several other species belonging to the same genus (Bendiksby
et al. 2011).
Assessment Information
Red List Category & Criteria:
Critically Endangered B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)
ver 3.1
Year Published:
2021
Date Assessed:
February 10, 2020
Justification:
Moluccella bucharica qualifies as Critically Endangered (CR)
under category
B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) because it is endemic to a small area, with an EOO and AOO of 8 km
2
,
located
in only two locations, the population is severely fragmented, and
there is decline in habitat
quality and number of location and subpopulations of this species. Climate change is projected to
further reduce the available habitat of this high-elevation restricted species.
