Languages also have phonotactic constraints on what can occur
in a particular position in
a syllable. For example, English does allow for CCC onsets, but not any three consonants
can occur in this position: /tkf/ would not be possible as
the beginning of an English
syllable. Different languages have different constraints. Some languages allow for some
consonants to be nuclei, e.g.
Cantonese m
h /m
/ ‘not’,
ng
h /
/ ‘five’. Other
languages restrict what can occur in the coda, e.g. Mandarin Chinese allows only /n/ and
/
/. Spanish does not allow /s/+C clusters in onsets and so
words borrowed from English
add a vowel to the beginning to change the syllable structure, e.g.
estrés ‘stress’. Some
languages allow a much larger range of consonant clusters in onsets, e.g.
German
schwach /
/ ‘weak’,
straße /
/ ‘street’, French
pneu /
/ ‘tyre’.
