Background of Nobel Prize


  1. The Nobel Prize award was first conferred in 1901. It is given in the name of Alfred Nobel who was a Swedish inventor.

  2. The season for Nobel Prize begins in October every year.

  3. The Nobel Prize is awarded yearly to the individuals or organizations who do an extraordinary job in the field of Physics, chemistry, literature, peace, physiology or medicine and Economics.

  4. All the Nobel Prizes are given at Stockholm, Sweden except for the Nobel Peace Prize which is awarded at Oslo, Norway.

  5. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine field is awarded by the Karolinska Institute. While in Physics, Chemistry and economics the prize is awarded by Royal Swedish academy of science.

  6. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by Norwegian Nobel Committee. In Literature, the Swedish Academy grants the Nobel Prize while the Sveriges Riksbank prize is given in the field of Economic Sciences.

  7. Three people at maximum can share a Nobel Prize.

  8. Between 1901 and 2020, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 603 times to 962 people and organizations. With some receiving the Nobel Prize more than once, thus making a total of 930 individuals and 25 organizations.

Conclusion
Literature has influenced the world greatly and has many times even changed it or the better. However, there have also been times where a few works of literature have resulted in wars, conflicts, controversies and has even divided people based on ideologies. Legendary writers like Ernest Hemmingway, Pablo Neruda, T.S Elliott, William Faulkner, Herman Hasse and Rabindranath Tagore have bagged the Nobel Prize for literature in the past. Ernest Hemmingway was honored with the prestigious prize in 1954. This noted novelist and writer from the United States has penned several path breaking literary works like ‘A Farewell To Arms’, ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’, ‘The Sun Also Rises’ and ‘The Old Man And The Sea’. Hemmingway has also penned several short stories as well. T.S Elliot was considered one of the best poets of the 20th century. Many works of these individuals are famous worldwide and some of their novels have also been the inspiration behind blockbuster flicks.
