Khiva is one of the ancient cities of Khorezm, an unparalleled jewel of medieval oriental architecture. It is located on a plain 25 km south of the present city of Urganch.
According to legend, the city of Khiva was founded by Som, the son of Prophet Nuh. Since the city was located on the caravan route, merchants often stayed there. Passengers who got down to the city and enjoyed the life coming out of its deep well said "hey-whoah" in surprise. Interpreting this in their own way, local residents began to call the city "Hei-voh", "Khaiva", "Khivak".
One of the chroniclers of that time, Al-Istakhri (930), included the city of Khiva in the list of the 30 largest cities of his time.
