My favourite book

There are many good books. My parents have a big library at home, and when I have spare time I read some of the books that my parents read when they were of my age. I do not think that books written in the 19th, 18th centuries or even earlier may not be useful for a contemporary reader. There are over 300 books in our home library. Among them there are plays by Shakespeare, historical novels by Walter Scott, detective stories by Conan Doyle and many others. But sometimes, I buy a new book. Contemporary writers have their own style and manner. They write about problems that people have to face nowadays.

One of the books I have recently bought is written by a modern French writer, Francois Lelord. It is called «Hector's Trip». It is a modern bestseller, and is already translated into several languages. It is a story of a young doctor, who decided to make a world tour in his search tor happiness. He wanted to understand what happiness means for him and whether it means the same for all people around the world. Hector meets many people on his way. Some of them look happy but the reasons for that were different. He learned that happiness does not depend on money or fame. Hector met and made many friends in different countries. He observed their way of life and came to conclusion that there are very many reasons for happiness, so that it is not possible to unite all of them. One may become happy, if they find their own answers to the questions «What is happiness?» «How I may become happy?» Hector found his own way to happiness, he understood, that he really did not have to travel so far to find it. In conclusion, I think the problems touched upon in the book could be interesting for any young person. I always advise all my friends this book to. It’s difficult to say what is my favorite book, because many of them have changed my ideas, vision and opinion about some things. My favorite writers are Dostievskii, Gogol, Bulgakov, Turgenev, Nabokov, Chekhov, Bunin. I think their books I can read over and over again. The last book that impressed me a lot is “Master and Margharita” by Bulgakov. When I finished to read I was really sorry, that I hadn’t read it earlier. Somebody says that there is nothing special there, just another crazy story. But for me it is a very good example there is good and bad in our world. And unfortunately very often we can not make the right decision from the first time. We trust and love the wrong people but don’t pay attention on those who loves us. Maybe the story is little bit crazy, but I like it a lot.
The students’ life in the language learning countries
Nowadays it is very important to learn foreign languages. You can't imagine an educated person, who doesn't know any foreign language. Some people learn languages because they need them in their work; others travel abroad; for the third studying languages is a hobby. Every year thousands of people go from one country to another either on business or for pleasure and the knowledge of languages helps them to communicate with people and understand them.
English occupies a special place, as it is a language spoken by many people and used in various spheres of life. English is very important for the development of international contacts. More and more contacts are established with the countries of Europe, with the USA and other English-speaking countries. Our foreign partners need specialists who have a command (to know) of one or more foreign languages and can speak them fluently.
A real professional can't do without knowing foreign languages, especially English as it is an international language. Hundreds and hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers are printed in English and read all over the world. Half of the world's scientific literature is written in English. It's the language of progressive science and technology, trade and cultural relations, commerce and business.
English is the language of international communication. The majority of international telephone calls are made in English. More than seventy per cent of international mail is written and addressed in English.
Eighty per cent of all computer texts, including all web sites, are stored in English.
English is a world language. It's the most widespread language on earth, and it is second only to Chinese in the number of people who speak it. At our university the course of English runs for three years. During the course students read and translate texts on their specialty, make up different topics and dialogues, learn professional vocabulary and study English grammar.
Learning a language is not an easy thing. It's a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and patience. But it's a must (necessity).
