Question 9: Task
Prepare a scheme of work for about 90 hours of teaching, which may be spread in one of the following ways:
A two-hour evening class, once a week for 3 terms of 12 weeks.
Four 45 minute classes per week for 3 terms of 12 weeks.
Three 1 hour classes, ditto.
Three hours of English per day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks.
Three weeks intensive English, consisting of 5 days of 6 hours each.

Specify the age and level of the students. Indicate the pattern of activity - one lesson a week devoted to writing compositions, 10 minutes a week to pronunciation practice, or whatever is your choice. Include the course aims, the language items or functions introduced or revised (lesson aims), sample language, and for some of the items give examples of practice activities which seem particularly appropriate.

Scheme of Work:
Age and Level: Adult learners, intermediate level (B1)
Methodology: Communicative approach, task-based learning, student-centered activities
Term 1 (12 weeks, 24 hours in total)
Class: Two-hour evening class, once a week

Lesson 1: Getting to Know Each Other


Course Aims: To introduce the course and get to know the learners and their learning objectives.
Lesson Aims: To give personal information, use question words and short answers.
Sample Language: Where are you from? What do you do? Are you married?
Practice Activities: Pair work interview, whole-class mingle activity.

Lesson 2: Daily Routines


Course Aims: To talk about daily routines and habits.
Lesson Aims: To use present simple tense to describe routines and frequency adverbs.
Sample Language: I usually have breakfast at 7 am. I sometimes go to the gym.
Practice Activities: Matching game, writing a diary.

Lesson 3: Describing People and Places


Course Aims: To describe people and places using adjectives.
Lesson Aims: To use comparative and superlative adjectives.
Sample Language: She’s taller than me. This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.
Practice Activities: Picture description, group work to compare two cities.

Lesson 4: Talking about the Past


Course Aims: To talk about past events using past simple and past continuous.
Lesson Aims: To describe actions in progress and completed actions in the past.
Sample Language: I was having dinner when the phone rang. I went to Paris last year.
Practice Activities: Storytelling game, pair work conversation about past vacations.

Lesson 5: Making Plans


Course Aims: To make future plans using ‘going to’, present continuous and present simple.
Lesson Aims: To express intentions and arrangements.
Sample Language: I’m going to visit my family next weekend. I’m meeting a friend for dinner tonight.
Practice Activities: Role-play making plans, group discussion about weekend plans.

Lesson 6: Expressing Preferences


Course Aims: To express preferences using ‘like’, ‘love’, ‘hate’, etc.
Lesson Aims: To use vocabulary related to food, hobbies and sports.
Sample Language: I love playing tennis. I hate broccoli.
Practice Activities: Ranking game, discussion about favorite foods and sports.

Term 2 (12 weeks, 24 hours in total)


Class: Four 45-minute classes per week
Week 1 – 3: Language Functions
Course Aims: To develop specific language functions, e.g. giving advice, making suggestions, apologizing, etc.
Lesson Aims: To practice functions in context and develop fluency.
Sample Language: If I were you, I would ask for a promotion. Let’s go out for dinner tonight. I’m sorry for being late.
Practice Activities: Role-play, debate, games.

Week 4 – 6: Grammar Revision


Course Aims: To revise grammar topics from previous term and consolidate learning.
Lesson Aims: To identify common errors and provide feedback and correction.
Sample Language: Present perfect vs. Past simple. Conditional sentences. Reported speech.
Practice Activities: Error correction exercises, guided writing activities.

Week 7 – 9: Vocabulary Building


Course Aims: To explore and learn new vocabulary related to specific topics, e.g. health, media, travel, etc.
Lesson Aims: To develop strategies for expanding vocabulary and using new words effectively.
Sample Language: Alternative medicine. Fake news. Adventure travel.
Practice Activities: Vocabulary games, reading and listening activities, personalized vocabulary lists.

Week 10 – 12: Pronunciation Practice


Course Aims: To practice individual sounds, word stress, and intonation patterns.
Lesson Aims: To raise awareness of pronunciation features and develop listening skills.
Sample Language: Focus on weak forms in connected speech. Contrasting short and long vowels. Using stress for emphasis.
Practice Activities: Tongue twisters, minimal pairs, authentic listening tasks.

Term 3 (12 weeks, 24 hours in total)


Class: Three 1-hour classes per week

Week 1 – 3: Reading Skills


Course Aims: To practice various reading skills, such as scanning, skimming, predicting, and inferring meaning.
Lesson Aims: To enhance reading speed, comprehension, and critical thinking.
Sample Language: Authentic texts from newspapers, magazines, and online sources.
Practice Activities: Comprehension questions, summary writing, discussion.

Week 4 – 6: Writing Skills


Course Aims: To improve writing skills by focusing on organization, coherence, and accuracy.
Lesson Aims: To provide guidance and feedback on writing tasks.
Sample Language: Emails, reports, essays, etc.
Practice Activities: Guided writing tasks, peer review, error correction exercises.

Week 7 – 9: Listening Skills


Course Aims: To practice various listening skills, such as identifying main ideas, recognizing specific details, and understanding different accents.
Lesson Aims: To enhance listening comprehension and note-taking abilities.
Sample Language: Authentic audio and video materials from a variety of sources.
Practice Activities: Comprehension questions, dictation, gap-filling exercises.

Week 10 – 12: Speaking Skills


Course Aims: To develop fluency, accuracy, and interactional skills in speaking.
Lesson Aims: To provide opportunities for spontaneous and structured speaking practice.
Sample Language: Various speaking tasks, such as role-play, presentations, discussions, etc.
Practice Activities: Task-based speaking activities, group work, peer feedback.

Alternative Schedule:


Three weeks intensive English, consisting of 5 days of 6 hours each
Week 1: Grammar and Vocabulary
Course Aims: To revise and expand grammar and vocabulary knowledge and skills.
Lesson Aims: To provide a comprehensive overview of key grammar and vocabulary items.
Sample Language: Tense system overview, modal verbs, phrasal verbs, collocations, etc.
Practice Activities: Error correction exercises, guided writing activities, vocabulary games.

Week 2: Skills Development


Course Aims: To develop receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills.
Lesson Aims: To practice and improve various skills in an integrated way.
Sample Language: Authentic materials and tasks from different genres and sources.
Practice Activities: Skills-based tasks, pair and group work, feedback and reflection.

Week 3: Fluency Practice


Course Aims: To develop fluency and accuracy in speaking and listening.
Lesson Aims: To provide extended speaking and listening practice in complex and authentic contexts.
Sample Language: Debates, discussions, role-play, presentations, etc.
Practice Activities: Project-based tasks, individual and group work, task-based speaking activities.
