Teaching Objectives for an English Course at a University

Developing students' proficiency in written and spoken English, raising their comprehension and love of English literature, and introducing them to various writing and analytical strategies are just a few of the main course objectives for a university English course. Along with developing students' vocabulary and pronunciation skills, the course's other objectives could include fostering their capacity for critical thought and inquiry.
Course Aims Table:
Goals | Teaching Activities | Learning Objectives | Assessment |
Pair work and group work tasks that involve students in discussions and debates. – Students will be able to express themselves clearly and effectively in both writing and speaking. – Regular writing tasks that let students hone their written communication abilities, like essays and reports | Writing and speaking tests that gauge students' capacity for expressing their ideas and views
Boost knowledge of English literature The class will examine literary works from many eras and genres. – Students will get a greater understanding of English literature. – In-depth class discussions of the topics and literary devices employed in diverse works. – Close reading activities that help students delve deeply into the analysis and interpretation of texts. • Written assignments that encourage students to study and comprehend literary materials; • Trips to the university library or nearby bookshops to increase students' exposure to literature. – Oral presentations in which students discuss the results of their research on a specific author or piece of literature.
Develop research and analytical skills | - Students will be able to assess various forms of data and critically evaluate sources. – Students will gain a thorough comprehension of a subject. – Research-based tasks that call for a variety of data collection and analysis from the students. – Class discussions that push learners to assess sources and hone their critical thinking abilities. – Students will share with the class the results of their research. | - Analytical tasks that assess pupils' capacity for inquiry and critical thought. – Presentations that demonstrate students' capacity to gather and examine various kinds of data.
Inconsistences:
The course's goals may be inconsistent in that it emphasizes communication skills development yet makes no mention of grammar or sentence structure in particular. Although it's feasible for pupils to develop their communication abilities without specifically concentrating on grammar, it might be worthwhile to add a learning aim for this subject.
Modification of Aims:
The course's objectives appear to be comprehensive and in-depth overall. However, as was already indicated, it might be advantageous to include a learning aim that deals with grammar and sentence structure. The objectives of the course could also be changed to include goals for boosting students' self-assurance when speaking English, for example, through role-playing or other interactive exercises that offer chances for communication practice in a relaxed setting.
