Reflective Learning Journal Task 3.1

Read the following words of a teacher (T) in class trying to teach beginners. She/he is teaching ‘can’ ‘can’t’ for ability.


What is the teacher’s (T) mistake? (actions in brackets)

T: “I can read” (reads newspaper)(true)


T: (takes off spectacles) “Oh, I can’t see!”(mistake)
T: (pretends to swim) “I can swim”(true)
T: (grabs leg as if has cramp) “Oh, I can’t swim!”(mistake)
T: (points to ceiling and jumps up with arm stretched out) “I can’t touch the ceiling”( mistake)

Do not introduce the sentence abruptly if you are teaching beginners the modal verb "can," which serves as a synonym for "ability.»


Asking for permission to smoke by saying, "Can I smoke?" or "I'm not allowed to smoke. ".Teacher shouldn’t explain all of forms to the beginner learners it is difficult to understand it. teacher ought to choose another method for beginners.


Questions to Unit Three. These questions only require a short response

Q1. When teaching a structure, teachers should always slow down when speaking


Teachers should be natural. If you enunciate each word clearly and speak slowly, learners won't be able to distinguish between normal speeches.

Q2. Contractions should not be taught at an early stage


Contraction words like "haven't," "can't," "won't," etc. (since this is the language that we all use on a daily basis. Additionally, they will speak and pronounce in a very unnatural manner.

Q3. Teachers should make use of a wide range of media e.g. realia, OHP’s etc.


Using pictures, realia, overhead projections, etc.
The students will have greater motivation, greater focus, and a better understanding of the structure.

Q4. Elicitation means telling the students answers


Using elicitation and letting the students figure things out will help you guide them to knowledge for themselves.


Q5. It is vital to teach both the correct form and meaning
It is crucial to impart knowledge of both the right form and meaning.

Q6. We should teach the 3rd conditional tense to beginner classes

Q7. An error is a slip of the tongue


A slip of the tongue is not error.
Q8. Choral drilling involves the whole class repeating the item a number of times.
All of the students in the class repeat the piece repeatedly during choral drilling.
