Question 4: Task
Minimum word length: 800

Examine other language items as in task 3, e.g.

comparison of adjectives
passives
reported speech

or functions such as

expressing likes and dislikes
expressing disagreement
apologizing

In the case of functions, examine the language used.

Comparison of Adjectives:
The comparison of adjectives is used to describe and compare the qualities of two or more nouns. It is used to show the degree of a particular quality possessed by different objects or persons.
Example: The blue dress is more beautiful than the green dress.
In this sentence, the comparison is between the beauty of two dresses. The adjective «beautiful» is used in the comparative form to show that the blue dress has a higher degree of beauty than the green dress.
Passives:
Passives are used to show that the focus is on the action itself rather than the person or thing performing the action. The passive voice is formed using the auxiliary «be» and the past participle of the main verb. It is often used in academic writing, news reports, and scientific reports.
Example:The car was stolen last night.
In this sentence, the focus is on the action of stealing the car, rather than the person who did it. The passive voice is used to show that the action happened to the car, rather than being performed by someone.
Reported Speech:
Reported speech is used to report what someone said, without using their exact words. It is often used in news reporting, storytelling, and in academic writing.
Example: She said that she was tired.
In this example, the person reporting the speech is summarising what the speaker said, rather than using their exact words. The sentence uses the past tense because the speaker said this in the past.
Expressing likes and dislikes:
Language used for expressing likes and dislikes often makes use of modal verbs and expressions like «I love» or «I hate».
Example: I love chocolate.
In this example, the speaker is expressing their preference for chocolate. The verb «love» is used to show that the speaker has a strong liking for chocolate.
Expressing disagreement:
Language used to express disagreement often makes use of modal verbs and expressions like «I don't agree with» or «I disagree».
Example: I don't agree with your opinion on this matter.
In this example, the speaker is expressing their disagreement with someone's opinion. The phrase «don't agree» is used to show that the speaker has a different opinion to the person they are speaking to.
Apologizing:
Language used for apologizing often makes use of modal verbs and expressions like «I'm sorry» or «I didn't mean to».
Example: I'm sorry for keeping you waiting.
In this example, the speaker is apologizing for something they did that caused someone else to wait. The phrase «I'm sorry» is used to show that the speaker regrets their actions and is asking for forgiveness.
