NATURAL VALUES OF THE SAZANI ISLAND – KARABURUNI PENINSULA, AS GOOD TOOLS AND 

INDICATORS FOR THE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF THE FIRST MPA OF ALBANIA

Summary 

The area Sazani Island – Karaburuni Peninsula is the first MPA in Albania, proclaimed on 2010, with the 

status  of  National  Marine  Park,  including  a  surface  of  12.570  ha.  This  poster  presents  a  synthetic 

description of natural and biodiversity values of this area. The data have been provided by a rapid survey 

on  the  relevant  area  in  July  2009,  as  well  as  from  the  existing  published  data  (Antolovic  et  al.  2005; 

APAWA ed. 2007; Beqiraj 2006; Beqiraj & Kashta 2007; Beqiraj et al. 2008; Gjiknuri 1980; Kashta 1987; 

Kashta  et  al  2007;  MMPAU  2007;  NEA/AKM  1999;  Tilot  &  Jeudy  de  Grisac  1994;  UNDP/GEF/MEFWA 

2010). The relevant area is characterized by a high diversity of landscapes, with steep and inaccessible 

cliffs,  fissures,  capes,  caves,  small  beaches  and  bays.  At  the  mediolittoral  stage,  “trottoirs”  of 

Lithophyllum  bissoides  and  biocenosis  of  mediolittoral  caves  are  present.  In  the  infralittoral  stage  the 

most  important  biocenosis  is  that  of  Posidonia  oceanica  meadows.  In  the  hard  beds  and  rocks  of  the 

infralittoral, perennial brown algae are dominant in the western side of Karaburuni and Sazani. The most 

important  group  is  that  of  brown  algae  Cystoseira,  represented  with  five  species.  Another  important 

biocenosis is that of semi-obscure  caves, where  the red coral  Corallium rubrum  and several species  of 

sponges  are  present.  Coralligenous  biocenosis  is  present  in  the  circalittoral  zone,  with  calcareous  red 

seaweeds,  gorgonians  and  bryozoans.  The  presence  of  the  loggerhead  turtle  Caretta  caretta,  the 

common  dolphin  Delphinus  delphis,  the  bottlenose  dolphin  Tursiops  truncatus  and  the  Mediterranean 

monk seal (Monachus monachus), has also been recorded in marine waters of this area. This species are 

among  the  most  threatened  species  in  global  scale,  protected  by  several  international  conventions 

(Barcelona, Bern, Bonn, CITES). At least 36 marine species, which are of international concern and belong 

to the lists of endangered and/or protected species of several conventions, are present on Sazani Isand – 

Karaburuni  area.  They  involve  seagrasses,  seaweeds,  cnidarians,  sponges,  crustaceans,  mollusks, 

echinoderms, fishes, pinnipeds, reptiles and cetaceans. These data show the importance of the relevant 

area  in  a  regional  and  international  context.  In  national  scale,  about  75%  of  endangered  species  of 

marine  animals,  mostly  benthic  macroinvertebrates,  which  belong  to  the  Red  Book  of  Albanian  Fauna 

(2006)  and  to the  Red  List  of  Albanian  fauna  (2007),  have  been  recorded  in  Sazani  –  Karaburuni  area. 

Most  of  the  mentioned  species,  as  well  as  other  species  and  biocenosis  are  good  indicators  for  the 

environmental monitoring of the area. Recently, Albania is paying much attention and making efforts on 

strengthening the system of protected areas, with a special focus on MPAs and CPAs. In this prospect a 

Management Plan for the Sazani – Karaburuni MPA will be prepared within the framework of an ongoing 

project (GEF/UNDP/MEFWA 2010–2014). In this process, the natural and biodiversity values of this area 

will  be  among  the  main  drivers  for  the  recommended  conservation  and  management  actions  and 

measurements. A key issue within this framework would be the preparation of a monitoring program for 

the terrestrial and marine biodiversity of the Sazani – Karaburuni MPA.
