practically and intellectually. Every day, we go to museums for free and look 
at one painting. 
Museums and art galleries must charge an admission fee in order to remain 
safe. The United States does not pay for cultural activities other than 
theater, movies, and so on. Museums also require funds in addition to their 
operating expenses. 
Should Museums Charge Admission Or Not? 
There is no right answer to this question as it depends on the museum’s 
mission and what the museum is trying to achieve
. If the museum’s mission 
is to provide educational opportunities to the public, then charging 
admission might not be the best option. 
However, if the museum’s mission 
is to generate revenue, then charging admission might be the best option. 
Ultimately, it is up to the museum to decide what is best for its visitors and 
its bottom line. 
In the year since the spending review, 58% of museums have had cuts, and 
20% have been completely cut. Museums and public collections are in a 
league of their own when it comes to selling art. I believe the most cost-
effective option would be to charge admission fees. Free museums are an 
important British tradition, but I don’t want them to disappear. If you charge 
for entry, you can avoid having to sell paintings, close galleries, or fire 
employees. It is not acceptable for us to lose sight of our galleries and 
museums in the name of cost-cutting.
