Some people think that it is a waste of time for high school students to study literature, such as novels and poems.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Social studies such as literature has always been an indispensable part of the high school curriculum. Despite this, some argue that studying literature is not a practical choice for high school students when time is in question. Even though I agree literature has much to offer to students at this stage of their lives, I would argue that it rarely proves useful in one’s life.
A case can be made that studying literature is virtuous in many ways, especially for teenagers. The main upside comes from being able to remember and recite large quantities of verses and texts. This way, they can improve their retention levels as well as learning interesting accounts of the past. Beyond that, it is often claimed reading novels and poems can help reinforce one’s imagination and creativity since one has to use their mind to visualize characters and events in fictional stories of literature. Finally, teaching high schoolers is one possible way to preserve cultural heritage; literary works such as novels capture much of our cultural norms and beliefs.
Nevertheless, these benefits barely translate into real-world terms/rewards in most teenager’s case. Being able to recite a poem or a novel reference is hardly enough to make a living in today’s world. Unlike in the past when poets such Navai and Pushkin were held in high regard, people now are less keen to support this form of art, making it a less rewarding choice of career. Most pieces of literature seem cryptic to young people because of the archaic language used in them. Hence, students are often confused by poems and stories riddled with unrelatable metaphors and expressions.
In conclusion, having considered teaching of literature to high school students from both angles, I am more inclined to say that this particular subject is not necessarily the wisest use of their time.
