Subordinative Compounds
Regardless of both components are neither equal in importance in subordinative compounds they are based on the domination of the head-member which is the rule of the second IC. In fact, subordinative compounds is recognized as that it makes the bulk of Modern English compounding, furthermore, it has been mentioned that most words in English language belong to the subordinative type while coordinative compound words are marginal elements in this field. Subordinative compounds are classified into: syntactic and asyntactic compounds Syntactic compounds are defined as compounds whose constituent parts are grammatically related and their relation corresponds to a syntactic category. In case of blackbird, there is the same relationship between substantive (bird) and motivating adjective (black) as well as in the syntactic group a black bird. Inside this category of asyntactic compounds, such order and connection do not exist in unlike to syntactic ones, for example in fire-proof (proof against fire) or cry baby (the baby cries). Asyntactic compounds if the words do not conform to the grammatical patterns current in present-day English and the order of the stems differs from the normal syntactic order in a sentence or phrase, for example, a town-house-means a house in a town, a cigarette-case-means case for cigarettes, backyard-means a yard at the back side of the house, etc. Semantic classification of compounds According to semantic classification of compound words, the meaning of compounds is related to the meaning of the constituents, but it cannot be deduced from them in many cases. For instance, a hot-house means a heated glass building for growing plants, it is not just any type of hot house, instead it is a building that has special use. However, its last element has enough in common with uses of the word house for us to realize the relationship. On the other hand, in the compound word hot dog it is difficult to find any relationship between the meaning of the parts dog and hot the second component in the nominal compound hot dog (a sausage in a sandwich). Based on the semantic relations between the parts of nominal compounds; the head and modifier(s), linguists distinguish three different semantic classifications in English language: endocentric compounds, exocentric compounds and copulative compounds.
