The structural meaning of Compounding
The structural meaning of the derivational form of compound words can be described through the interrelationship of its ICs. Particularly, in compound adjectives the constituents convey the generalized meaning of instrumental or agentive relations which can be understood as done by or with the help of something. Words like wind-driven means that driven with the help of wind, or mud-stained as stained with mud. We may divide compounds according to derivational pattern into two groups: mono semantic and poly semantic. If there is only one meaning of such compound words duty-bound, mud-strained or wind-drive. The mono semantic pattern that gives rise to small and peculiar group of adjectives, which are used attributively, this kind of compounds correlate with attributive phrases with a numeral for their first time, e.g. a three-day (beard) or a seven-day (week). Usually the compound words in poly semantic structure lead to a particular freedom of interpretation of the semantic connections between constituents, and even to the polysemy of the compound words. For instance, it is possible to interpret compound noun toy-man meaning as two various thought a) a man who makes toys, a toy-maker or a toy that has the shape of a man. Unlike this the compound words clock-tower may represent a tower with a clock fitted in or tower that serves as at the time clock.
