The “Paris Basis” The Basis for the work of the YMCA all over the world: “The Young Men’s Christian Associations seek to unite those young men who, regarding Jesus Christ as their God and Saviour, according to the Holy Scriptures, desire to be his disciples in their faith and in their life, and to associate their efforts for the extension of his Kingdom amongst young men.“ (1855)
History of the German YMCA 1823: The roots of the German YMCA reach back to the foundation of an association of young men for the purpose of missionary work in “Barmen-Gemarke” in the Ruhr Area by the 16 years old F. W. Isenberg. 1844: Foundation of the first YMCA in London by George Williams. 1855: Creation of the World Alliance of YMCAs, and Paris Basis. 1883: The first German YMCA was founded in Berlin.
The National Association of the YMCA in Germany (CVJM-Gesamtverband) is the umbrella organisation of the Christian youth work carried out under the names: • „Christlicher Verein Junger Menschen“ (CVJM) Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) • „Evangelisches Jugendwerk in Württemberg“ (ejw) Evangelical Youth Movement • „Christliches Jugenddorfwerk Deutschlands“ (CJD) Christian Youth Village Movement
