It is estimated that only about 5-10% of Old English words which is still used in English today, have their roots in old English, but many of these words have undergone significant changes in meaning or spelling over time.
For example:

  1. "Beon" (to be) - This Old English verb is still used today in Modern English, but with significant changes in meaning and spelling. The Old English word "beon" had a broader meaning than its Modern English equivalent, encompassing notions of existence and identity. The spelling has also changed, with the "e" being replaced by an "a".

  2. "Mōna" (moon) - The Old English word "mōna" is still used in Modern English to refer to the Earth's natural satellite. However, the spelling has changed, with the "ō" being replaced by a "oo" and the "a" being replaced by an "o".

  3. "Wīf" (woman) - The Old English word "wīf" is still used in Modern English, but with a different meaning. In Old English, "wīf" meant "woman" or "wife", whereas in Modern English, it generally refers only to "wife".
