Static Ether-Channel

Introduction and Overview This guide contains two sample Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), or dynamic channel group, configurations and a sample static channel group configuration. Link aggregation is the process where two or more ports in an Ethernet switch are combined together to operate as a single virtual port. Link aggregation is a key component in resilient network design, since it increases the available bandwidth between network devices and it provides continuity of connectivity if one link is broken between network devices. By aggregating two or more links together, you can increase the bandwidth between neighboring devices since this is effectively additive, where two links give up to twice the bandwidth of one link. Having more than one link to a neighboring device provides connectivity if one of the links break, where a feature of this resiliency is the speed at which link aggregation reacts to the change of link status in a matter of millisecond. A link aggregation can only exist between a pair of neighboring switches, where the switch ports that are aggregated on one switch cannot be connected to switch ports that are not aggregated on the other switch. There is a small topology in which 2 switches S1 and S2 are connected to each other and we need to combine these two links into a single logical connection.

S1 (config) # interface fa0 / 1
S1 (config-if) # channel group 1 mode is required
S1 (config) # interface fa0 / 2
S1 (config-if) # channel group 1 mode is required

S1 (config) # interface port-channels 1


S1 (config-if) # switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
S1 (config-if) # switchport mode trunk
Here the user used the desired mode and the trunk switching mode. The modes on both switches must be the same, so the user can set this on the other switch as well.

Now set up on the S2 switch:

S2 (config) # interface fa0 / 1
S2 (config-if) # channel group 1 mode required
S2 (config) # interface fa0 / 2
S2 (config-if) # channel group 1 mode required
S2 (config) # interface port-channel 1
S2 (config-if) # switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
S2 (config-if) # switchport mode trunk
2. Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) -
Link Aggregation Control Protocol is an IEEE protocol originally defined in 802.3ad and used to create EtherChannel. This protocol is almost similar to Cisco PAgP. There are different modes where you can customize the interface. These include:

ON: In this mode, the interface will be part of the EtherChannel, but no negotiation will take place


Active: In this mode, the interface constantly tries to convert the other side interface to EtherChannel.
Passive: In this mode, the interface becomes part of the EtherChannel only if required by the opposite interface.
Off: EtherChannel is not configured on the interface.channel or 5 cables are disconnected and one is left, the other can deliver our command without any problem……


Comment: The advantage of this is that even if one cable is physically disconnected in another channel or 5 cables are disconnected and one is left, the other can deliver our command without any problem……



Comment : We take 4 cables as one and pass them to the etherchannel, indicating the ports. Switches can be divided into groups of up to 6, no more………………….
