If we look at this chart, showing the out-of-pocket costs, or cash payments, for complementary and alternative medicines, we can see the type of therapy or medicine on the left hand side and the amount in billions of dollars on the horizontal axis. The overall amount spent in one year on these products in the USA alone was almost $31 billion. If we look at the chart in more detail, we can see that the greatest amount, approximately $15.5 billion, was spent on natural remedies, such as herbs and other plant-based natural products. The other spending on medicines was on homeopathic remedies, which are medicines made from highly diluted substances, and was close to $4 billion. The rest of the spending was on practitioner treatments - massage, chiropractic and osteopathic care - and on mind-body exercises such as yoga. Together, the cost came to just over $12 billion. When we take the cost of these treatments all together and compare it with spending on mainstream medicines we find that this equates to roughly 1.5% of total healthcare expenditure.
