Using Main Ideas to Support Summarization
Prior to reading the article make your prediction in the “Before Reading” section and support it with evidence.
While reading, make a note of any unknown vocabulary or words used in a different way that you’d like to discuss with your group.
Stop periodically in the text to write the “gist” of the section. Remember, the gist is the main idea. Main ideas are paraphrased. To help you, I’ve included our “Get the Gist” song.
After reading, create one question that you would like to discuss with your group.
Finally, combine each “gist” to write a quality summary.
