- KIM WILLIAMS TRAIL CONNECTIONS TO CANYON RIVER CLARK FORK SUBDIVISIONS
FOR RELEASE JUNE 15, 2017 MORE
PRESS RELEASE For immediate release New Milwaukee Trail Extension Opens Thursday A long-awaited link in the Milwaukee Trail system opens this Thursday, connecting the Kim Williams Natural Area to the Canyon River subdivision in East Missoula. The project was conceived 21 years ago when the Missoula County Park Board voted to support extending the trail along the south shore of the Clark Fork River, just east of the UM campus. Since then, City and County governments have been working with a variety of public and private entities to develop this critical link in the trail system.
The new connection gives cyclists and pedestrians an uninterrupted route from southwest Missoula to East Missoula, and makes it easier to reach destinations like Milltown State Park and the Bonner/Turah trail system. Missoula County officials are enthusiastic about the opportunities the new connection provides. “It is exciting for this important connection between Missoula and East Missoula to finally be complete. It was anticipated when the Canyon River subdivision was approved and has been on our wish list for years. We look forward to providing more outdoor recreation opportunities for our rural residents,” says Missoula County Commissioner Jean Curtiss.
Run Wild Missoula, a local runners and walkers club, contributed $15,000 to the project. Executive director Tony Banovich says club members are supportive of a healthy built environment. "Run Wild Missoula is pleased to have been able to contribute to the completion of this trail connection,” Banovich said. “This type of project continues to expand opportunities for the fit, active and healthy lifestyle that is such an integral part of the Missoula community. Our 1,500+ members are excited about the new routes this connection provides for running, walking and biking."
Montana State Parks’ Recreational Trails Program (RTP), a federally funded grants program which supports Montana’s trails, approved a $60,000 grant for the new trail. According to Trails Program Manager Beth Shumate, the agency realized the importance of establishing an uninterrupted trail from Missoula into East Missoula, providing access to Milltown State Park and the Blackfoot River corridor all the way from Traveler’s Rest State Park in Lolo. FOR RELEASE THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2017
“Several connector trails along this route link residents and tourists to parks, businesses, schools and an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. This trail connection is important for the continued development of the destination quality bike system this region is being recognized for,” Shumate said.
The location of the trail, along the riverbank and passing under three bridges, presented project engineers and contractors with many challenges, which significantly increased project costs. The new trail called for bank and slope stabilization and a structural retaining wall. The local offices of Morrison-Maierle, Inc. contracted with the City to overcome the unique engineering problems the trail site presented.
Montana Department of Transportation’s Community Transportation Enhancement Program (CTEP) funds covered nearly 75 percent of the project’s $533,220 total cost, with an award of $392,113. Montana State Parks’ Recreational Trails Program granted $60,000, Missoula County forwarded $36,107 in project funds from the Atlantic Richfield Company, the City’s Park District allocated $30,000, and Run Wild Missoula donated $15,000. Montana Rail Link has partnered with the City to provide trail access via the MRL right-of-way.
Missoula Parks and Recreation is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new trail on Thursday, June 15, at 1 p.m. Speakers include Ward 1 City Council representative Bryan Von Lossberg, Jim Lewis of Montana Rail Link, Chet Crowser of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Tony Banovich of Run Wild Missoula, and representatives of other project partners.
