Word list: 

Scarcely (adv) – only just or almost not (C2)
Example: I was scarcely able to move my arm after the accident

Belch out (v) – to produce a large amount of a substance such as gas or smoke, 
especially when this is unpleasant or harmful, or to be produced like this 
Example: The exhaust pipe belched out dense black smoke

Curb (v) – to control or limit something that is not wanted (C2)
Example: The government should act to curb tax evasion 

Uphill struggle (n) – something that is very difficult to do and needs a lot of

Example: This is a doomed city
