2.2 Advantages and challenges in using case-study method
Advantages of applying case-study method
Many students are more inductive than deductive reasoners, which means that they learn better from examples than from logical development starting with basic principles. The use of case studies can therefore be a very effective classroom technique.
The method of case-study is a tool to apply the theoretical knowledge to solve practical problems. The method promotes students' critical thinking, the ability to listen to and consider an alternative point of view to express their arguments. With the help of this method, students have the opportunity to demonstrate and improve the analytical and evaluative skills, learn to work as a team to find the most efficient solution to the problem.
Being an interactive teaching method, the case-study method is gaining students’ positive attitude, ensuring the development of theoretical and practical use of the material. It effects the professionalization of students, promotes their maturation, and generates interest and positive motivation towards learning. Simultaneously, the case-study method serves as a teacher’s way of thinking, their particular paradigm, which helps to think and work in a different way updating their creativity.
The case-study method is most widely used in teaching economics, management science, and business abroad. The case-study method is considered to be one of the "advanced" active teaching methods.
The case-study method requires readiness of students, availability of their independent work skills; lack of students training, poor motivation may lead to a superficial discussion of the case.
Case studies are have long been used in business schools, law schools, medical schools and the social sciences, but they can be used in any discipline when instructors want students to explore how what they have learned applies to real world situations. Cases come in many formats, from a simple “What would you do in this situation?” question to a detailed description of a situation with accompanying data to analyze. Whether to use a simple scenario-type case or a complex detailed one depends on your course objectives.
Although CMT is still not considered as a popular organizational training method, the advantages of CMT may encourage organizational instructors to further apply it. Improving the long-term memory, enhancing the quality of decision making and understanding the individual differences of individuals are the advantages of CMT.
Most case assignments require students to answer an open-ended question or develop a solution to an open-ended problem with multiple potential solutions. Requirements can range from a one-paragraph answer to a fully developed group action plan, proposal or decision.

  • A decision-maker who is grappling with some question or problem that needs to be solved.

  • A description of the problem’s context (a law, an industry, a family).

  • Supporting data, which can range from data tables to links to URLs, quoted statements or testimony, supporting documents, images, video, or audio.

  • Case assignments can be done individually or in teams so that the students can brainstorm solutions and share the work load.

  • Task-based learning can be implemented, and language is used to communicate.

  • Language skills are used in combination with other skills (e.g., business interpersonal, and problem-solving skills).

  • Integration of various language skills is possible.

  • Different media can be included.

  • Some cases can incorporate role plays.

  • Students may generate their own cases

A major advantage of teaching with case studies is that the students are actively engaged in figuring out the principles by abstracting from the examples. This develops their skills in:

  • Problem solving

  • Analytical tools, quantitative and/or qualitative, depending on the case

  • Decision making in complex situations

  • Coping with ambiguities

The case study method provides a student with actual theoretical knowledge and practical experience and opportunities to consolidate the monologic and dialogical skills of reasoning thoughts. opinions, ideas, proposals. Carrying research, a student studies to take alternative points of view and to argue for his/her own decision of a break-through situation, to show and to improve analytical and assessment skills and teamwork. It should be noted that the use of the ease study method requires a lot of time for the successful implementation of work on solving cases. However, the experience gained in the process of applying this method by teachers has shown that the ease method greatly increases the effectiveness of the educational process since it allows to simulate the future activities or the learners and form a positive motivation for mastering a foreign language and obtaining new competences as social activity. communication skills, listening skills and the correct expression of thoughts.
According to Khoshimov O ,”Case study method is an interactive technology, short-term training of schoolchildren, based on the analysis of problem situations which include various forms of activity, aiming not only at acquiring knowledge by students, but also at developing new qualities and skills. Studying the case brivs students to life, forms analytical and communication skills through facing real life situations. Case technology as the situation analysis method originates prerequisites for the creativity of teachers. Composing of a case is carried out outside the classroom and includes research, methodological and constructive activities of the teacher. For the case study to be effective, it is necessary to observe two conditions: making a good case and determining the methods of its use in training. Therefore, our future work is focusing on the preparation a methodology for applying the case in the educational process.”
Along with many positive effects of using case studies, there are several disadvantages to consider, including:

  • Case study results can be difficult to replicate.

  • Case studies can be expensive and time-consuming.

  • Researchers can allow their own feelings to influence the case study, known as researcher bias.

  • Case studies can lack scientific methods and rigour to protect the accuracy of data collected.

  • Researchers can find the volume of data difficult to analyze and apply to larger population.

  • Teachers must find case studies that are suitable for their learners regarding content, complexity, and linguistic level, or they must write the

  • Reading and analyzing longer case studies can be time-consuming.

  • Assessment criteria need to be carefully established, explained, and considered.
