INTRODUCTION
“Another issue that will never lose its relevance and importance for us is the task of educating our children as independent-minded, modern knowledge and professionals, strong-willed, truly patriotic people,” said President Sh.M. Mirziyoyev [15, 489].
Technology has greatly impacted the teaching of foreign languages, not only in terms of available tools but also in our perception of it. While the teaching of English has become more focused on job-related purposes, it is important for educators to impart values to students and help them become better individuals, particularly when working with younger students.
Literature can be a positive and negative influence on students when teaching English. Selecting shorter texts can be more manageable for both teachers and students. It can make language instruction more enjoyable by facilitating interactive discussions on grammar, sentences, and engaging topics. Students can express their opinions on interesting and controversial subjects, including translations. Any engaging text from any part of the world, written by a living author or from thousands of years ago, can be used.
However, using literature presents challenges for both students and teachers. The stories' topics may not always be familiar, not only because of differences in sensitivity to themes but also because of elements from an ancient culture that may be more difficult to explain to students from certain countries than others.
Selecting an appropriate story to discuss in class is crucial to keep students focused on what they understand instead of what they do not. The traditional method of teaching foreign or second languages focused solely on vocabulary, grammar rules, and paragraph development, which was tedious and relied on rote memorization.
Various theories exist on language learning through literature, but the Socio-cultural theory of learning is considered the most effective. Its primary emphasis is on language learning in the context of culture. The socio-cultural theory proposes that learning is a social activity. People learn different skills and practices within their community, and the same applies to language learning.
This introductory study guides the reader through six centuries of English literature.
George Bernard Shaw is a celebrated personality in the chronicles of British history who rendered significant inputs to society through his writings, especially his dramas. He perceived theater as an influential instrument for advancing ethics by presenting resolutions to ethical dilemmas in his plays. Besides, he addressed varied ethical quandaries in his literary pieces to motivate individuals to take a conscientious stance towards them. These quandaries encompassed matrimony and gender parity, the genesis of prostitution, relationships, and other societal matters. His dramas are principally pedagogical as they bring into focus the prevailing social issues in society.
