Conclusion on Chapter III
Literary Devices help create special effects in a work of literature which is clarifying or emphasising on certain concepts of the writer. It resonates with the narrative itself and it also allows the reader to notice the theme most certainly. Shakespeare as a great master of it profusely employs literary devices across his works. In the play Hamlet, the text’s timeless richness is also because of the nature of literary devices used in it. Shakespeare is particularly genius at using them in such a way that more than one literary device work at a time [21, 44].
In literary works, many elements strengthen the position chosen by an author, improve storytelling, and provoke critical thinking among readers. According to Mays, “the language of poetry is often visual and pictorial,” which makes poems dependent on specific words and their creative meanings. Metaphors, allusions, flashbacks, similes, and personification are the literary elements that are perfectly combined in William Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Hamlet [22, 35]. However, the list of the applied figures of speech is far from being full because this English poet is known as a master of any literary genre (Mays 1147). In that chapter, the analysis of the interplay of several literary devices will be developed to promote a better understanding of Shakespeare’s thought. The legacy of this author is complex and fascinating, and although Hamlet was created several centuries ago, many of its themes remain valid for today’s society. Being equipped with a number of analytical tools and knowledge, a modern student can easily name a variety of professional techniques [23, 55].
Although Moby-Dick starts in the first person narrative style, its long and winding sentences considerably test the reading ability of its readers. They are also highly imaginative with the excessive use of figurative language. The diction shows Melville’s marine background and his skillful use of the marine jargons. The conversation as well as the character descriptions show that Moby Dick has taken a considerable time to portray the depth of its character. For literary devices, Melville mostly relies on similes, personifications as well as parallelism.
