About the Book

The present book builds upon the earlier work of J. Hale, 'Theory of Functional Differential Equations' 

published in 1977. The authors have attempted to maintain the spirit of that book and have retained 

approximately one-third of the material intact. One major change was a completely new presentation 

of linear systems (Chapter 6-9) for retarded and neutral functional differential equations. The theory of 

dissipative systems (Chapter 4) and global attractors was thoroughly revamped as well as the invariant 

manifold theory (Chapter 10) near equilibrium points and periodic orbits. A more complete theory of 

neutral equations is presented (Chapters 1,2,3,9,10). Chapter 12 is also entirely new and contains a guide 

to active topics of research. In the sections on supplementary remarks, the authors have included many 

references to recent literature, but, of course, not nearly all, because the subject is so extensive.

About the Book

Fourier analysis is one of the most useful tools in many applied sciences. The recent developments of 

wavelet analysis indicates that in spite of its long history and well-established applications, the field is 

still one of active research. This text bridges the gap between engineering and mathematics, providing 

a rigorously mathematical introduction of Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis and related mathematical 

methods, while emphasizing their uses in signal processing and other applications in communications 

engineering. The interplay between Fourier series and Fourier transforms is at the heart of signal 

processing, which is couched most naturally in terms of the Dirac delta function and Lebesgue integrals.

The exposition is organized into four parts. The first is a discussion of one-dimensional Fourier theory, 

including the classical results on convergence and the Poisson sum formula. The second part is devoted 

to the mathematical foundations of signal processing - sampling, filtering, digital signal processing. 

Fourier analysis in Hilbert spaces is the focus of the third part, and the last part provides an introduction to 

wavelet analysis, time-frequency issues, and multiresolution analysis. An appendix provides the necessary 

background on Lebesgue integrals.

The primary goal of these two volumes is to present the theoretical foundation of the field of Euclidean 

Harmonic analysis. The present edition contains a new chapter on time-frequency analysis and the 

Carleson-Hunt theorem. The first volume contains the classical topics such as Interpolation, Fourier Series, 

the Fourier Transform, Maximal Functions, Singular Integrals, and Littlewood-Paley Theory. The second 

volume contains more recent topics such as Function Spaces, Atomic Decompositions, Singular Integrals 

of Nonconvolution Type, and Weighted Inequalities. These volumes are mainly addressed to graduate 

students in mathematics and are designed for a two-course sequence on the subject with additional 

material included for reference. The prerequisites for the first volume are satisfactory completion of 

courses in real and complex variables. The second volume assumes material from the first. This book is 

intended to present the selected topics in depth and stimulate further study. Although the emphasis falls 

on real variable methods in Euclidean spaces, a chapter is devoted to the fundamentals of analysis on the 

torus. This material is included for historical reasons, as the genesis of Fourier analysis can be found in 

trigonometric expansions of periodic functions in several variables.
