The case of Rana Plaza

   In Rana Plaza case, the reason why the building was collapsed was the upper floors of the building has been built without any permit, which makes it structurally unsafe. According the architect of the building, this place was designed specifically for shops, and could not handle constant vibrations of generators and machinery. Furthermore, the building has been built with low quality materials. I think the first person to blame is Mr. Rana himself, the owner who built the upper floors of the building and put making profit in the first place rather than being mindful about workers’ safety. Second person is, the mayor. Because there seems to be something shady and the mayor might be involved in bribery. Third guilty persons were other responsible individuals because they insisted workers to come and work under unsafe conditions even after the engineer concluded the building had been unsafe.

   The international companies were not directly responsible for the disaster in Rana Plaza because they were not informed and aware of the condition of the building and these workers were not direct employees of these companies. However, they should not neglect the victims and consequences of this disaster and provide as much help as possible. International clothing brands should provide pledges and monetary compensations for the victims and their families of this collapse. After this disaster which took global attention, several international brands were highly likely to move other countries because after this disaster, the international companies would not risk their reputation and stop working with these contractors.

   In order to avoid such situations, government officials need to stop engaging in corruption. Moreover, looking at the virtue ethics approach, instead of offshoring production process to low-income countries, large brands can localize the production through hiring employees from these countries. In that case, they will have diverse employees from different cultural backgrounds which can improve the companies’ CSR.
