Colloquial coinages( words and meanings) SLANG The term slang is ambiguous and obscure. The “New Oxford English Dictionary” defines slang as follows: 1. the special vocabulary used by any set of persons of low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type; 2. the cant or jargon of a certain class or period; 3. language of highly colloquial type considered as below the level of standard educated speech, and consisting either of new words or current words employed in some special sense. bread – basket = the stomach JARGONISMS In the non-literary vocabulary of the English language there is a group of words that are called jargonisms. Jargon is a recognized term for a group of words that exists in almost every language and whose aim is to preserve secrecy within one or another social group. In England and in the USA almost any social group of people has its own jargon. Jargonisms do not always remain on the outskirts of the literary language. PHONETIC EXPRESSIVE MEANS AND STYLISTIC DEVICES Plan 1. Onomatopoeia 2. Alliteration 3. Rhyme 4. Rhythm ONOMATOPOEIA Onomatopoeia is a combination of speech sounds which aims at imitating sounds produced in nature. It is sometimes called "echo writing". By nature: sea, wind, thunder, etc. By things: machines or tools, etc. By people: sighing, laughter, patter of feet, etc. And by animals. Direct and Indirect 1. Direct onomatopoeia is contained in words that imitate natural sounds, as ding-dong, buzz, bang, cuckoo, ping-pong and the like. 2. Indirect onomatopoeia is a combination of sounds the aim of which is to make the sound of the utterance an echo of its sense. “ “And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain“ (E. A.
