COURSE OBJECTIVES

The purpose of the course is to strengthen and extend the student’s Finnish language skills on the basic level. During the course, the student will deepen his/her understanding of the basic structures and the core vocabulary of Finnish language. He/she develops both the receptive and productive skills on the basic language level. He/she practices to use Finnish in everyday communication situations, and learns to tell fluently the basic facts about himself/herself.


STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO



  • use and understand sentences and frequently used expressions on everyday topics.

  • communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters

  • to discuss and write about the basics facts about themselves

  • know the basic vocabulary that is easy to predict and many of the basic structures



Hours allocated to the course. The total number of hours allocated to the course is 90
academic hours, of which 36 hours are classroom lessons and 54 hours are self-study. In total, 32 hours (lecture, practice/seminar) of topics are taught in the classroom, and 4 hours are for midterm and final exams.

CRITERIA AND PLAN FOR ASSESSING STUDENT KNOWLEDGE

To test students' knowledge of this subject, three methods of control are implemented. Current control, Midterm exam, and Final exam.


Current control. Students’ performance is evaluated throughout the course of the academic semester. The instructor places significant emphasis on assignments, homework, project work and vocabulary tests as well as presence and student engagement during the sessions. Active participation is taken into consideration throughout the classes. This area is assessed with a maximum score of 40 points.
Midterm. In the eighth week of the academic semester, a midterm exam is administered to evaluate the student’s knowledge and abilities after completion of the relevant academic programme section (subjects). The midterm evaluation consists of written exam, where students’ skills are evaluated on the following areas: listening, vocabulary and structures, text comprehension and writing. It is scored a maximum of 30 points
Final exam. In the final form of evaluation is conducted in the 16th week of the semester to assess the student's theoretical and practical knowledge. The final control is administered according to the schedule devised by the Department of Academic Affairs for the final control exams. The final exam consists of written and spoken tests. All the areas of language skills are evaluated: listening, vocabulary and structures, text comprehension, writing and speaking. It is scored a maximum of 30 points.

Workshop

Student participates to the classes regularly. He/she works actively in the class taking part in all of the activities done during the lessons, e.g. oral inquiry, pair discussions and games, groupwork and technology mediated learning (Kahoots). He/She also works regularly at home and completes the homework given: e.g. exercises, translations of texts, vocabulary work and writing tasks.

Vocabulary tests

Student participates in vocabulary tests on core vocabulary and passes them. Vocabulary tests are held to ensure that the student have a sufficient command of basic vocabulary and he/she understands the importance of vocabulary as a key component of language skills. The vocabulary test links are provided through Hemis.

3.

Project work

Portfolio My Home. The students are taking photographs of their home/room and also describing it in Finnish. The minimum length of the text is 60 words. Students will also shoot a short video (minimum of 1 minute) about their favourite place/object in their home and justify their choice. The portfolio is uploaded to Hemis.

4.

Writing task

The student writes short text (minimum of 60 words) about the title Minun päiväni (My Day). The text is returned in Hemis.
