Grammar: Passive Voice

  • In a normal (active) sentence, we put the agent (the person or thing that does the action) before the verb.
  • Agent verb

    All the vertebrae compose the spinal column or the spine.

    But sometimes:

    -we do not know the agent of the action.

    -the agent is not important.

    -the agent is obvious.

    In this case we can use the passive.

    The bones of the skeleton are connected together by the joints.

    The skeleton is composed of bones.

    We make the passive with to be+ past participle.

The main part of the head and face (1) is called the skull. The skull (2)…… of twenty-six bones. These bones form two basic parts of the skull, that is facial and cranial parts.

The bones of the skull (3)…… with the first cervical vertebra. The bones of the skull (4)…… together so firmly ['f3:mli] (крепко) that it is very difficult to separate them.

The bones of the skull form one large cavity and some smaller cavities. The large cavity (5)……. the cranial cavity (мозговая полость). The brain is in the cranial cavity. One of the smaller cavities is the cavity of the nose. The other two cavities are the orbits. The eyeballs are in the orbits.
