Do tattoos spread blood-borne diseases? 
Tattoos are believed to be a potential cause of spreading blood-borne 
infections. What makes a person susceptible to hepatitis or HIV via a 
tattoo is the needle used to inject the pigment into the skin. The 
tattooing needle is repeatedly pierced through the skin for the dye/ 
dyes to form the tattoo, the needle pierces through the dermis and 
comes in contact with the blood vessels, posing twin threats. Firstly, 
there is a risk of tattoo ink getting into the blood vessels leading to 
complications. Secondly, the needle might carry the blood particles of 
one person and can contaminate the ink. With the same needle and 
ink being used for a number of clients, there is a risk of spreading 
hepatitis, inform healthcare experts. 
Talking about the chances of spreading blood-borne diseases like 
HIV, Dr Abhishek shared, “One of the major modes of communication 
for hepatitis or HIV is mixing of body fluids, be it blood or serum or any 
form of body discharge. In tattooing, this happens if the tattoo artist is 
not careful in using disposable equipment or sterilising the 
instruments. If he does a tattoo for one person infected with hepatitis 
or HIV, blood gets deposited on the needle and can get reintroduced 
to a new subject as it gets into the bloodstream and then that person 
is bound to have hepatitis or HIV. So it is very risky and difficult to 
treat.” 
Thus, to reduce the risk of transmission, it is advised to be well aware 
of the tattoo parlour and the artist. “With the tattooing process, we 
breach the skin barrier. It is very pertinent to ensure the tattoo artist 
has a proper machine and well-sterilised equipment. The artist should 
use disposable needles for each client and use inks that are sterile in 
nature,” said Dr DM Mahajan, Senior Consultant - Dermatology, 
Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.
