What do dermatologists have to say?
In tattooing, foreign substances are introduced into the skin, which makes the skin prone to a variety of infections. The first clinical signs noticed are in the form of redness, swelling, rashes and painful blisters. In some cases, the reaction does not necessarily happen soon after the tattooing is done and might take two or three days to show symptoms. The allergic reactions can also take time to develop. Commenting on the long-term health effects of tattoos, Dr Amit Vij, Senior Consultant Dermatologist, Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute (PSRI), New Delhi, said, “Tattoos can lead to keloid or hypertrophic scars. Some tattoos with metal-based inks interfere with MRI scans leading to distorted images, with time, tattoos fade and can look aesthetically bad.” It is warned that tattoos have the potential to form keloids or thick scars. The piercing of the needle to inject ink causes scarring on the skin. Since this is a permanent inking procedure the reaction could persist. Post the tattooing process completion, it is advised to adhere to the precautions for safety. Most important is to keep the tattooed skin clean and allow it to heal. Dr Mahajan ad d ed, “Tattoo has been a current rage. Impulsive tattooing done to hide some infirmity needs to be followed up with precautions to make sure it doesn’t turn into a regret tattoo.” To reduce the chances of allergic reactions, it is advised to avoid swimming as chlorinated water can cause reactions and to avoid direct sunlight exposure as that can cause tattoos to fade and react. Staying hydrated and keeping the tattooed skin moisturised is also helpful. With the advent of technology and developments in science, tattoo removal has become a reality. Laser treatments are available as the safest option to reverse a tattoo. However, tattoos do not disappear in one sitting and can take months to fade. Explaining the process of tattoo removal, Dr Trupti Agarwal, Consultant Dermatologist, Trichologist and Aesthetic Dermatologist, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH), Mumbai, shared, “While some tattoos cannot be removed completely, Q-switched lasers can be used for tattoo removal. Around 6-12 sessions are required depending upon the size and depth of the pigment. Laser treatment for removal also depends upon the colour of the tattoo. White and yellow-coloured tattoos are the most difficult to treat. Other complications with tattoo removal include loss of colour, scar or granuloma formation, allergic reactions and unwanted colour change in the tattoo.” Getting a tattoo done is a personal choice but before getting inked, it is important to understand the side effects of permanent tattooing. Although there is a lack of evidence on tattoos causing cancer, the other health complications cannot be undermined. Choosing a hygienic tattoo parlour and following the precautions help reduce the risk. Download 180.85 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
