Meaning of classroom observation

  • What is classroom observation?
  • Simply put, classroom observation records and measures a teacher's teaching ability by systematically observing and recording their class performance.
  • There are two common types of classroom observations:
  • As part of a formal job-performance evaluation - This is often done annually by a school administrator.
  • As part of an improvement drive - Performed by a teacher's peer or peers, instructional specialist, or coach, this kind of classroom observation is often done to provide the teacher with relevant feedback based on their interactions with students and their execution of teaching methods.
  • While it's often new or specialist teachers who go through classroom observation, everyone can benefit from the process - if done correctly. This Teaching Wiki will go through a few pros and cons in a later section.
  • Classroom observation can be a few minutes or a few days long. There's no set duration, and it all depends on the goal of each observation.
  • Regardless of goals and duration, each classroom observation is meant to:
  • be done with professionalism, integrity and courtesy
  • have an agreed-upon protocol
  • be done objectively
  • be confidential

Different classroom observation techniques

  • When performing classroom observations, observers have access to a wide range of observational techniques:
  • checklists
  • charts
  • rating scales
  • narrative descriptions
  • interaction schedules
  • closed-ended questionnaires
  • open-ended questionnaires
  • Although all these have their uses, they're not nearly as popular as interactive coding systems like the Brophy-Good Dyadic Interaction System and the Classroom Observation Schedule. These allow the observer to document almost every interaction between the observed teacher and their students.
  • Designed to minimise bias when collecting information during the observation process, interactive coding systems can identify and capture classroom behaviours in a way that are easy to categorise. This then allows for great objectivity during the data analysis and feedback phase of the classroom observation.
