The future of English
Sevara Kurbanova – teacher, Andijan State Institute of Foreign Languages.
Sharobiddinov Azizbek – student, Andijan State Institute of Foreign Languages.
What kind of future do you imagine in a decade? And in a hundred years? Of course, hardly anyone can imagine a future in which there will be no place for the English language. It is safe to say that the influence of the English language on the world's population will only increase every year. Therefore, English can rightfully be called the language of the future. English will become an international language behind the scenes due to the fact that it is the language of conferences, meetings, technical documentation, scientific progress, etc. Even other languages are regularly supplemented with borrowings from English, including Russian.
Besides this, we can say with absolute certainty right now – the English language will definitely change. However, not only English, but all other languages of the world. Languages are not static and are constantly evolving. This has happened in the past, and this process will not stop in the future. The English language was formed from Old English, which, in turn, arose on the basis of the Germanic dialect of the Angles and Saxons. Modern English will continue to evolve.i
It is important to understand that any other predictions about language development are inaccurate and unreliable. To make predictions about the future of the English language, scientists evaluate a lot of factors simultaneously: its development in the past, current trends, political and technical predictions, data from computational linguistics and neuro-linguistics. We can rely on facts such as the history of the language and the peculiarities of its structure and linguistic development to make fairly accurate predictions. But we cannot predict which way the technical process will go, what the political situation in the world will be, how the economy will develop. Language development is influenced by many non-linguistic factors that are difficult to predict.
And what is the role of the English language in the world of the future?
English plays the role of lingua franca in the modern world. Representatives of different countries and cultures communicate on it in a variety of situations: in travel, in trade, in business. The process of turning English into an international language began relatively recently. If it continues, English may displace many other languages of the world and absorb regional dialects, while undergoing significant changes. It may not even be the same English that we are so used to. Most young parents also already speak English at a certain level, they are engaged in courses with the whole family. This is one of the reasons why English is considered a common language.
Take, for example, the words that young people often use in their everyday life. Now there is a sufficient number of English words of international use. These are, for example: "telephone", "gadget", "make-up" and so on. In any case, over the years there will be very few people who will not be able to speak English. Although it definitely may not be the main language, because it is impossible to exclude the popularity and demand for other languages, but English is clearly out of competition so far.ii
When discussing the future development of the English language, it should be noted that there are several variants of modern English, but two of them occupy a special position: British and American.American and English variants are not different languages, and it is important to identify the differences between the two language variants and the general patterns of their development. The influence of the British version is due to its traditional use as a subject of study in the education system of most countries of the world. Besides.A number of phonetic and lexical features distinguish the speech of a resident of England, Canada, Australia, etc. And now it's really difficult to determine the future global language.
New forms of 'English' are still swiftly evolving. Example,Crystal estimates that around 60-70 new 'Englishes' have emerged since the 1960s in countries across the globe. There are an estimated 400 million people who speak English as a first language and 7-800 million people who speak English as a second language. Around a billion more speak English as a foreign language. This means that now there is just one native speaker to every five non-native speakers of English -- an unprecedented situation in the history of languages. It also means that people are no longer exclusively looking to Britain. British English is now a minority amongst the many 'Englishes' that are spoken around the world.iii
From the above information, it is clear that the original British dialect will also not be able to survive far. However, it is predictable that English is still a global language, not excluding the future, since a huge mass of political, social, economic documentary information, as well as many data in the field of international technologies are presented in English.
