The line chart illustrates the number of people who were employed in four sector of US economy in the years between 1960 and 2020.
Overall, it is clear that the number of jobs in retail trade and healthcare system steadily increased while the figure for manufacturing and agriculture sector mainly decreased. Manufacturing, however, despite a slight decline, remained the highest employment sector over the years.
In 1960, most of the employment in the US was in manufacturing sector, with 15 million jobs. This figure grew until 1980, reaching a peak of 20 million jobs. The number of this, however, started to constantly decline, and it was about 13 million jobs in 2020. Agriculture sector had nearly 6 million jobs in the beginning and it witnessed a minimal decrease by the end of the period, which remained the lowest employment sector.
Turning to the healthcare and retail system, they were the lowest-employment sectors in 1960, accounting for, respectively, only 3millions and 6 million jobs. The number of them considerably grew until 2020, and they experienced the same trend, amounting to approximately 16 million jobs for both.
