CHAPTER I. APPROACHES TO TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC
PURPOSES (ESP) IN ENGINEERING PROGRAMS
1.1.
The concept of English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
In this part of our graduation work we talk about the concept of English for
Specific Purposes. The concept of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) gathers
importance in engineering education as the engineering students’ knowledge of
particular terminology and ability to interact in a professional environment help
ensure their adaptability in the global work culture. Despite a curriculum that
advocates functional notional syllabus for effective oral and written
communication, Technical English teaching in universities has failed to motivate
the engineering students to build communicative competence in a progressive
manner and reach the required standards by the end of the program. To eliminate
this deficit, the teachers need to identify the tested approaches, methods, and types
of instructional programs that could address the present problem of the engineering
students’ lack of oral and written communication skills in English. This paper
deliberates on the different options in the language teaching approaches for the
ESP teachers to choose from and prepare the engineering students to float abreast
of the global tide.
ESP and Engineering Education ESP courses involve courses like
accounting, computer science, tourism, business management, law, marketing,
medical and paramedical sciences, engineering, etc. ESP becomes Technical
English (TE) when the goal is to train the students to communicate in the context
of engineering profession. All undergraduate engineering programs of any
university are primarily designed to provide the students a broad knowledge base
of the engineering discipline as well as a set of intellectual skills such as logical
reasoning critical thinking, and reflecting. In addition, the engineering students are
expected to adopt a scientific approach and to be competent in designing. Their
oral and written as well as listening and reading skills are important in the
globalized context because they ensure the students' adaptability for transnational
mobility and flexibility to work in a global work culture that needs teamwork and

10
managerial, leadership, and personal skills.
Engineering graduates require a range of skills to maintain relevance in the
global environment that keeps changing in the new knowledge economy.
Communication skills are a vital component of the engineering and managerial
professions, recognized by the academic and the industry alike. Being multifaceted
communication incorporates various elements such as oral, written, aural, visual,
intercultural, and interdisciplinary. These need to be considered when teaching
communication as a need-based subject in engineering education. There is a clear
necessity for effective English communication skills for engineers in the current
globalized environment. The concept of ESP gathers significance in engineering
education by focusing the learner's attention on the particular terminology and the
communication skills required in the professional field.
As the students of today and as part of the professional group of employees
in the days to come, some mode of communication is necessary for their survival.
A student's career success or failure depends on his or her oral communication and
presentation skills, and as such they are considered career enhancers. They include
presentations, peer review; role play, video of student presentations with individual
feedback, and up-to-date training in key software used in presentations by
graduates in the industry. All these academic activities rely on the students
1
ability
to remember, understand, analyze, apply, evaluate, and expand what is learned. So
what is taught in the classroom should visualize the world outside the institution
and take care of such needs.
