Developing linguistic competence (2)

Homework Task Four
Please refer to the lesson you chose for Homework Task One. In a one-page report or less, please do the following: First, explain briefly how you understand sociolinguistic competence (i.e., what does sociolinguistic competence mean to you); Second, explain how the lesson you chose for Homework Task One can be organized so that sociolinguistic competence is the focus.

Sociolinguistic competence is an ability to use the language that is appropriate to social contexts and accomplish appropriate speech acts, ability to select a topic that is suitable for the communicative event that involves the questions like what to say, how to say, whom to say, where to say. Moreover, culture affects to the communication between speakers and interlocutors. Therefore, sociolinguistic competence means ability of establishing correct communicative interaction. Every words/sentences may have a great impact on listener, more specifically how the speakers are influenced by their cultures in understanding and explaining messages.

Taking into consideration to reflect on the questions in homework 4, it made me concentrate on the process of teaching at the university. By the analysis to what extent my students are competent in sociolinguistic field, it doesn’t matter whether a given class is considered more communicatively oriented or less, sociolinguistic aspect of the lesson usually is mostly uninvolved in classroom practice.

After the info taken from the lecture on sociolinguistic competence, I understand that developing sociolinguistic competence is an essential skill for the students to acquire. What does sociolinguistic competence mean and how should it be developed? Should I teach it directly or indirectly? As an English teacher, it is significantly essential to explore in these spheres more and upgrade my lesson plans.

As task-based activities are decently communicative one, there are ways in which students are able to develop sociolinguistic competence. In any type of text that are used during the class, there are certain expressions that need to be explored. While working in groups or in pairs, students can focus on them and to other groups or pairs what it means in their understanding. The following task will be analysis through dictionary in which students consult and look up the meanings of their phrases/idioms. In their explanations, students will have similar ideas, but the dictionary meaning will be different. In their groups, students can prepare a report in which they explain those differences in the meanings. Alternatively, it can be assigned as a homework, in which they do research on looking for the origin and be ready to give reasons for the dictionary meanings. Another way of developing this competence in reading and writing lesson can be comparing two pictures on the same field and finding differences. The students can compare them according to certain criteria and be ready to explain what caused those differences the focus will be mostly on culture.
