Chapter II. Language teaching

2.1. Approaches and methods of language teaching.

Homework Task Six

The goal of this homework task is for you to compose your own language teaching statement and use one or more of the 12 principles to support what you do in your language classroom. Look at your Homework Task One lesson plan and then discern your teaching principles from that lesson.

To accomplish this task, you may do the following two steps:
Step 1: Read the teaching statement by Dr. David L. Chiesa below as an example, which is located after the References.

Step 2: Please write your own teaching statement (2 pages maximum). You may take your answers from the 3 action tasks above as a guiding framework.

Most teaching statements work for any classroom, no matter what the age of the students or the subject. When a teacher implements a combination of effective teaching statements, their students have more opportunities to perform better in class. There are many different approaches you can use in your classroom. Which ones will work best depends on your students’ preferences, as well as your schedule. When presenting a new subject to your class, it helps to include a demonstration. While some students will be able to grasp a new concept by hearing the information alone, others-particularly visual learners- will need to see it. Teachers are the ultimate resource for students when it comes to learning. When you are presenting your lesson plans, you usually show the right way to do things. This is a great way to introduce a concept, but you also want to solicit a more in-depth understanding. A great way to do this is to make intentional mistakes and ask the class to fix them. If you are an English teacher, you can write an excerpt on the board and riddle it with grammar mistakes. Instruct your students to identify these mistakes and rewrite the passage correctly. This method requires students to apply the knowledge they have gained in class. It also gives you a chance to evaluate how well each student comprehends the subject.

Once everyone has completed the assignment, you can review it as a class. Show each student how the passage should be written and address any questions that may arise. The best lessons often happen outside of the classroom. Getting out into the real world offers a new perspective for students and can help them gain a more profound understanding of what goes on in the classroom. Studying the different types of football expressions or idioms in a football match is an excellent example of learning from experience. You would start in class, explaining different types of expressions and idioms used in matches with their contexts. Once you have completed the lesson, take the class to the stadium to watch a football match. Have them search for the different football expressions or idioms you discussed in class. After coming across real situations, they will be able to analyze those expressions or phrases discussed earliest in class. Field trips like this offer valuable, real world experienced to students. They will gain confidence and motivation in class since they will be able to see that everything they learn has a connection to the world around them. Letting students lead the class in teaching requires preparation and a deep understanding of course. You can assign this task individually or break up students into groups. The goal of this statement is to get your students to display the knowledge they have and to share it with their classmates. In order to give a quality lesson, they will need to put extra time into making sure they fully comprehend the project. If they struggle in some areas, they will be motivated to ask questions in order to get the grade.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving is the second essential worth in my lesson in leading students enabling inquiry, critical thinking, and problem solving. I believe that learners’ conceptualization, application of abilities, analysis, and evaluation of information gathered through the lens of experiences in this process. Vygotsky (1994) explained that: “learners perceive experiences in a new environment through a cognitive and emotional reciprocal processing of previous and new experience” (as cited in, Golombek and Duran, 2014, p. 104). This discussion views the learning process not as a static moment, but one of continual evolution and progression. Enabling inquiry connects one’s past to the present, while also looking toward the future. While teaching the course “Language Learning” I focused on the theories of language learning with real life examples. In order to see the theoretical knowledge working in practice based on their language learning experience I asked my students to keep a diary of their learning. In their diaries students wrote their foreign language learning experiences and analyzed what went wrong, the reasons of making the same mistakes, and further actions for successful learning. Providing opportunities in the third value I have is creating the necessary social conditions for learning to happen. As a passionate language educator, my mission must include various concerns. I should pay attention to a student as a developing individual in learning a new language, culture, the appropriate support according to the student’s learning style, and intelligence elevating the self-esteem of my students and fostering a positive self-image is my one of my goals. For me, the human mind is inherently social which emerges out of participation in external forms of social interaction that become internalized psychological tools for thinking. It is through dialogic interaction and co-construction of meaning, where learners have potential growth in knowledge, skills, and awareness that can lead to development. However, an interaction can be fruitful when the learners feel comfortable in their learning contexts with their interlocutors. When I have to present a new topic, I always keep in mind the idea of creating friendly and supportive environment. Moreover, it is also important the way in which I present the new topic. For this reason, I chose an activity in which learners learn something new on their own.
