When a living thing is genetically modified, it means that scientists have changed its ‘genes’. These are the basic units of life that decide what things are like. They can be passed down from parent to child. Scientist change some species (or types) of plants to make them more productive, or to resist (or fight) diseases or insects that destroy them. In this case, they are changing a species of insect – mosquitoes.
